Hey Quad has a phone built into the console. It works in any modern browser, with nothing to install.

Open the phone

Sign in to Hey Quad. The phone bar sits at the bottom of the left-hand menu. On a narrow screen it runs along the bottom of the page. Click it to open the phone.

You can also open the full-page phone: press ⌘K (or Ctrl+K) and pick Phone.

The first time you make or take a call, your browser asks to use your microphone. Click Allow. Calls can't work without it.

You need an extension to use the phone. If you don't have one, ask your admin. See Extensions and devices.

The five tabs

  • Keypad: dial a number or an extension.
  • Recents: your recent calls. A badge counts missed calls.
  • Contacts: your team and saved contacts. Click one to call.
  • Messages: your text conversations.
  • Voicemail: messages left in your boxes. See Voicemail.

Place a call

  1. Open Keypad.
  2. Type a number or an extension.
  3. Check the From line. It shows the caller ID the other person sees. If you have more than one number, pick one.
  4. Press the green call button.

To change the number you call from, open the phone's menu and pick Caller ID. If it says No caller ID — ask an admin, you can still call other extensions. To call outside numbers, ask an admin for a number to call from.

Answer a call

When a call rings, the phone shows who is calling and plays a ring tone. Click Answer, or Decline.

If your browser allows notifications, you also get a system notification when a call rings.

The phone says Transferred call instead of Incoming call when a coworker passes a caller to you.

During a call

  • Mute turns your microphone off. Unmute turns it back on.
  • Hold puts the caller on hold. Resume brings them back.
  • Keypad opens the dial pad, for example to press a number in another company's menu.
  • Audio picks the speaker or headset for this call.
  • Transfer and Add call pass the caller on or bring someone in. See Transfer and consult.
  • End call hangs up.

While you are on a call, queues don't ring you.

Set your status

Click your status at the top of the phone and pick one:

  • Available: calls ring you.
  • Away: nothing rings you. Queues skip you, and a call to your extension goes to its no-answer step.
  • Do not disturb: works the same as Away.

If you belong to any queues, they are listed under your status. Pause a queue to stop its calls while you still take calls to your own extension. Pause all pauses every queue at once.

Go offline disconnects this phone. Go online reconnects it.

Text from the phone

The Messages tab lists your text conversations, newest first.

  • Open a conversation to read it and reply.
  • To start a new one, click New text. Type the number, pick the From number and press Send.

Texting works once your business is registered for it. See Set up text messaging.

Headsets and sound

Open the phone's menu, then Settings. Under Audio & devices:

  • Pick your microphone and speaker.
  • Press Test next to each one. When you speak, the bars should move.

Tips for clear calls:

  • A wired USB headset is the most reliable. Bluetooth works, but most Bluetooth headsets drop to lower sound quality while the microphone is on. That is how Bluetooth works, not a fault.
  • Use a headset, not open speakers. A microphone near speakers causes echo.
  • Use a wired network connection if your Wi-Fi is busy.

Calls between Hey Quad apps use HD voice automatically. See HD voice.

Things to know

  • The browser phone rings only while Hey Quad is open in a tab. If you close every tab, it stops ringing and calls go to your other devices or your no-answer step. To keep ringing with the browser closed, use the Windows desktop app, or add a desk phone or a forward to your cell.
  • Your browser can forget its microphone permission. If your microphone worked yesterday and doesn't today, check the site settings in your browser and allow the microphone again.
  • A sleeping computer can't ring. If your computer sleeps, calls won't reach it. Change its power settings, or add another device.
  • On a call on another of your devices? The phone shows a banner instead of call controls. Click Switch call here to move the call to this device. See Transfer and consult.
